Sergey Anokhin Kent State University

Sergey Anokhin is a Professor of Entrepreneurship at Kent State University. He received his Ph.D. in Management with an emphasis in Strategy and Entrepreneurship at Case Western Reserve University in 2006, at the time when its entrepreneurship program was consistently ranked in the top-10 programs globally. His earlier education accomplishments include a Bachelor’s degree in Economics/Finance and a Master’s degree in Management from Voronezh State University, Russia. In 2001, Sergey Anokhin came to Kent State University as an exchange student on a highly competitive Russian Presidential Scholarship for Studying Abroad among sixty other Russians who received that same honor.
Dr. Anokhin is best known for his research in the area of entrepreneurial arbitrage, entrepreneurship and corruption, corporate venture capital, small- and medium size firm networks, and social innovation. His research has received multiple accolades globally. For instance, his paper on arbitrage orientation, a novel form of strategic orientation that may help firms achieve high performance, was recognized among the best papers of the Academy of Management conference in Atlanta, GA in 2017. A paper on franchising that he co-authored with his doctoral student received the Paper of Distinction Award at the Australian Centre for Entrepreneurship Research Exchange conference in Adelaide, Australia, in 2015. The paper on venture migration he presented at the 2011 United States Association for Small Business and Entrepreneurship conference won the Journal of Small Business Management’s Editor Special Choice Award as the best overall paper. The paper on small- and medium-size firm networks, co-authored with Swedish scholars, was the recipient of the Outstanding Paper Award at the 4th IEEE International Conference on Management of Technology and Innovation in Bangkok, Thailand, in 2008. Based on the quantity and quality of his scholarly contributions, Sergey Anokhin was featured as the Scholar of the Month by Kent State University in April of 2015. His scholarship also garnered support in the form of research grants from a number of institutions in the U.S., Sweden, and Russia.
Sergey Anokhin has taught a wide selection of classes in management, strategy, entrepreneurship, technology and innovation, marketing, and global business at the undergraduate, Master’s, doctoral, and executive levels at several institutions in the U.S., Russia, Sweden, and Mexico. He also conducted a number of workshops for faculty and graduate students ranging from the Foundations of Entrepreneurship to Secrets of Publishing in Top Journals, and co-mentored the faculty to teach entrepreneurship in Saudi Arabia. Dr. Anokhin is open to considering novel teaching methods and course delivery platforms. He is active in mentoring the next generation of doctoral students, was involved in over a dozen dissertations, and has chaired three doctoral dissertation committees. All his students placed well, often with multiple job offers.
Professor Anokhin is actively involved in several research projects now, including the areas of entrepreneurial arbitrage, social innovation, entrepreneurship and corruption, and others, and looks forward to advancing the knowledge in the field of entrepreneurship in non-trivial directions.
